Breast reduction

Larger breasts are not always an advantage. Pain in the back, neck and breasts, indentations in shoulders from tight bra straps, sweating and inflammation under the breasts are the most usual causes of suffering by women having large, sagging and heavy breasts. In such cases the surgical correction is recommended.

Breast reduction surgery is not recommended for women planning breast-feeding since the surgery may have significant and unpredictable effect on the breast-feeding possibilities, as it may require cutting milk ducts leading towards or from the nipples.

The general anesthesia is administered for the surgery with the average duration of the surgery being 3 hours.

During the surgery excess breast tissue and tissue under the breast are removed, the breast size is reduced and the shape changed. The surgery may involve reduction of the areola which usually is stretched in large breasts.

Incisions are made around the areola, vertically from the bottom edge of the areola and the natural curve of the breast crease. After the removal of the excess breast tissue, fat and skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to higher position and the breast is reshaped. Small drain tubes are left after the surgery and removed the next day.
